Competitive Brimagine

—

This game-mode is an addition to Classic Brimagine, that adds character abilities and extra rules to make gameplay more fair and balanced.

Please choose one of these starter sheets:

Each player has two “signature” assets, a primary and a secondary. Your primary signature is always your main character. Your secondary signature is a supporting character or item to help your main character.

Each signature has an ability. Some abilities trigger before the match begins and some can trigger on your opponent’s turns, so read their descriptions carefully. You are allowed to read your opponent’s signature’s descriptions.

Turns work the same, three story turns for each player and then a climax. On the climax, your main character can only move once and make one action. However, you can choose to use your signature abilities instead. Some abilities count as moving and some count as acting, so make sure to check which they are.

On the climax you can move/act as normal, or move and use an action ability, or act and use a movement ability, or just use a signature ability, or if your signatures have both an action and a movement ability between them, then you can use both.

Your secondary signature cannot act or move during the climax but they can use their ability.

Ideal Goal – is the term for the goal that your signatures’ abilities are based around. However, you can create a similar or entirely different goal each match.

Ideal Setting – is the term for the setting that your signatures are themed around. However, you can create a similar or entirely different setting each match.

Signature Weakness – is the term for the limitation designed to balance out the unique power of signature abilities. Your signature weakness gives you an interesting problem to solve and makes your abilities fairer on your opponents.

Balancing Rules:

You cannot use your opponent’s signatures but you can have things happen to them. You can have your own signatures interact and talk at your opponent’s signatures, but your opponent’s signatures cannot respond until their own turn.

You cannot copy the effects of your opponent’s abilities. E.g., if my ability is to do a triple backflip, then you cannot triple backflip your signatures, background characters, items or set-pieces.

Destroyed signatures are replaced with functionally-identical copies, that inherit their predecessor’s progress, abilities, guiding principles and weaknesses.

If one player abandons a match of Competitive Brimagine before its completion, its counts as a win for their opponent.

If you want to have non-signature characters that only you can control, both players must agree to this. These characters are called tertiaries.

You may only destroy the object of your opponent’s goal during the climax. E.g., if your opponent’s goal is to stop an egg from cracking, you can only crack it during the climax.

You are not allowed to complete your opponent’s goal.

The following rules must be followed in normal competitive gameplay. They can only be broken if a signature ability explicitly says so. And even then, they can only break one of these rules:

You can only add things to the story setting that make sense to be there. E.g., no spaceship landings on the witch queen’s castle.

You can only use your signature ability once per turn. This goes for both story and climax turns.

You cannot steal signatures.

Signatures can be a group of characters. These are called Hoards. During the climax, when a hoard act/moves, all Hoard members must make the same action/movement/ability.
