Brimagine Rules V.2026
—
Brimagine is a game where players take turns telling a story. The game works best with two players but it can accommodate more.
To begin playing, each player will need to choose one of these starter sheets:
Office Hero | Dragon Hoard | Alien Holiday | Radio Invention
All sheets contain the assets needed to play and they are equally balanced. So just pick one that looks fun or pick one at random.
Each sheet has two “Signature” assets. Your first signature is always your main character. They are the hero of your story.
It is your main character’s job to complete a goal. There are three goals on your player sheet. Choose one goal to complete for your first match.
Your second signature is to help your main character complete their goal. These come in various forms, including locations, items, vehicles and other characters.
Now you need a place to play: the story setting. Each sheet has “locations” on them. Players can either combine their locations to form the setting, or you can use just one location. (You may want to write down the setting you’re using just so you know where you are.)
Decide one player to take the first turn. Players take three turns back and forth describing what is happening in the story. You can make your story turns as long and descriptive as you like.
The only things you are not allowed to do are use or make decisions for your opponent’s signatures. But you can have an affect on them, such as attacking or talking to them. Although, your opponent cannot answer back with their signatures until their own turn. You also cannot steal your opponent’s signatures, unless you have an ability that specifically says you can.
Each of your signatures has an ability. This is something that only your character can do, and no other character is allowed to do. There is a special type of abilities that have “condition” at the beginning of their description. For these abilities, if their unique condition is met, they can activate even on your opponent’s turns. So watch out if your opponent has one! Because as soon as you describe something that activates the ability, you cannot change what you described.
A match concludes on a final forth turn. On your final turn, you only get to make one movement and one action with your signatures.
One movement just means moving from point A to point B, regardless of distance. You cannot move through obstacles that have been previously described.
One action means either activating just one of your signatures abilities, or you can have your main character perform some other action. “Action” here meaning anything your character could do while remaining in place. Like throwing a rock at a monster. Although, you can use your action while moving. Like throwing a rock at a monster while running past it.
To win, you must complete your goal on your final turn. Or rather you must complete the last requirement for your goal on your fourth turn, i.e., putting the final nail in the coffin. But you can complete parts of your goal on all turns.
Guiding Principles: are a rule your main character must follow. So if your guiding principle says, “Hates swimming and is obsessed with icecream” then you cannot have your main character get in water without difficulty and any icecream they see will tempt them.
Signature Weakness: is pretty self-explanatory. It is a limitation that you cannot break. Something you have to work around and your opponent can exploit.
Any extra assets you find on your player sheet are there to help tell the story and can be added into the setting on your first three turns, but not your fourth turn.
If your character dies or is unable to continue their story, they are removed from play. You then create a new main character, who inherits their predecessor’s ability and progress towards your goal.
Picking up items and opening doors (that have not been described as locked or barricaded) can be done without an action.
Players cannot create inescapable prisons.
That’s all the rules! But playing the game is only half the fun of Brimagine. The other half is (drum roll please) …
